Why is sailing special and why it appeals equally to young and old, the ones who are after speed and competition, the ones who simply love peace and quiet of the little world which is their vessel , the ones who love travelling, seeing new lands, discovering new cultures, and many, many more.
Sailing is one of those truly addictive activities that once you try it, might change your life forever.
So how do I connect business training to sail training?
The two are very similar, but the latter has some distinctive advantage for the later.
It’s amazing to see how we at Sailpro have managed to change people – the way they look at their lives, how they look at their achievements, how they change their attitude towards issues that they leave behind as soon as they are on the boat.
During our activity we have trained many sailors up to the highest certificates within the world industry, who have come from different backgrounds, from CEOs of large corporations to DJs and students. Many of our students, after completing the training decided to introduce big changes in their lives, some of them have gone into professional sailing; some changed employment, some changed professions but I believe it would be difficult to find one person who has come out of the training unchanged.
Of course, I could write in this short article all the good that sailing brings to our work teams, how it could motivate people how much it could glue teams together, how it could help in post flexibility when CEOs suddenly can find themselves supervised by an intern.
Not for without good reason are there so many regattas held across so many different industry sectors. The HR departments have long decided it that yacht racing is a fantastic and motivating way of practicing team work.
Our rapidly changing economy is bringing change to our lives and our needs; we are becoming more aware of the need for a healthy lifestyle, a clean environment, a more humane approach to livestock – and our needs for training are also changing. More and more we need some sort of push to make us stronger, more adaptable to change, and aware of our attitude to our profession, money, spending and material possessions. The world today is a crazy place; we must clear our minds to be able to adapt and think about the future.
Our corporate training should start aiming more towards responsible living. Here is where sail training comes into its own. Not necessarily just fast and furious match-racing of the rich in the Masurian Lakes, the Gulf of Gdansk or Cowes... but maybe sailing trips of your work teams to unknown, just to take them out of their comfort zone and show that there is life outside the firm, there is a planet that needs attention, there is a way to gain more energy, see the world, meet new people, live with the conditions – the sea, the ocean, the weather. Suddenly after a few days they might discover they are finally and totally fully relaxed and stopped thinking about budgets and deadlines but started concentrating on their little planet with simple tasks— the boat. One day, many of them will thank you for that and that’s the biggest reward to an employer.
