Leadership coaching – its value for a leader and an organisation

Leadership coaching is an effective part of any business’s leadership development toolbox. It contributes to tangible business outcomes in terms of long-term improvements in personal and organisational effectiveness, measured by profit or cost-containment, or both.

Leadership coaching is a specific type of developmental intervention that can be carried out strategically with individuals, teams and organisations. Its aim is to support leaders to reach their fuller potential, enhance their self-knowledge, integrity and feeling of comfort with themselves. Leadership coaching can enhance leaders’ progress by focusing on what’s significant for them and for organisational success. It offers them developmental support, bringing awareness that learning is a continual and a valuable process.

Leadership coaching can contribute to an organisation on micro- and macro levels. At the micro level, leadership coaching provides greater satisfaction in professional and private lives, reduction of stress levels and frustration, and increased self-value and satisfaction with life. At the macro level, leadership coaching contributes to transformation of the organisation’s culture, structures, and patterns of decision-making by the leaders. This in turn can enhance creativity, productivity and motivation of its employees.

The main reasons organisations get involved in the leadership coaching processes include:

  • Improving leadership skills to meet required standards (performance management),

  • Developing leadership skills to meet changing job objectives (change management),

  • Improving leadership abilities for future roles (talent management),

  • Developing leadership qualities to strengthen leaders’ satisfaction and long-term opportunities (career management),

  • Enhancing leadership qualities to create a leading organisation (organisation management).

Leadership coaching aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the leaders, but it also has a transformational influence on the main areas of their lives, often simultaneously. It’s a holistic and a demanding process which implies a high quality partnership between a coach and a leader. Transformational leadership coaching concentrates on leaders’ transformation and strives for their authenticity and realisation of their potential. The transformation that becomes visible at the leaders’ behavioural level is an outcome of their internal deep change. Transformational coaching is mostly dedicated to leaders who are open to constant growth and paradigm change.
